Not sure exactly what you are asking..................but the frame generally gets built first.  3 or 4" channel depending on your sensitivity to GVW.  Not sure how you would build a bed first and frame later..................can you re-define the question??

Nice job!! Cant wait to see the final result.

i understand what you are saying now and well it would be hard to frame it now cause generally you build the frame first and cut what needs to be cut out of it then set you deck and boxes the only way i can see it working and i dont know the depth of your bed would be to get some wide channel and cut it to fit under the bed following your ups and downs thats the best i can figure it would be a lil heavier but it's about you only option from what i can see dont forget to cross brace it as well
Parent - - By JPWHITTON (**) Date 09-30-2008 01:09
what are you talking about cross braceing
Parent - By raftergwelding (*****) Date 09-30-2008 01:35
you'll need cross members on the frame of the bed

You should have got some the sheet metal bent at sheetmetal shop
Parent - - By JPWHITTON (**) Date 09-28-2008 14:45
I know that would of saved me some time on the welding and cuting
Parent - By texwelder (***) Date 09-28-2008 17:03
And a whole lot of grinding, but Hey I just finished my first custom bed for my truck and I'm already thinking of selling it and doin another one because I want to change some things and do some things different.
Parent - - By shorthood2006 (****) Date 09-25-2008 01:50
your bed will have to have a channel iron or square tubing frame rail to weld or bolt to the truck frame.
Parent - - By JPWHITTON (**) Date 09-25-2008 02:05
think i should pull top plate back off it is just tacked on .
Parent - - By snuffman (***) Date 09-25-2008 02:18
I no several people who start them like you have. Once they have it to the point that you have yours they figure where and how they want there box's. Then weld it out or good enough that when they flip it over it wont move out of square or come apart. Then flip it over and remeber where the box's are going to be and install the frame, working off square and center. If you do not have a way to flip it over you can weld what you have out and move the stand out of the way of where the frame will be. Hope this helps.

Thanks that sounds like a good plan.
Parent - - By JPWHITTON (**) Date 09-28-2008 01:45
HAY SNUFFMAN DO YOU  KNOW ANY ONE WITH A 03-04 OR A 05 DODGE PRITY SURE THAY ARE THE SAME. WONDERING IF I CAN SINK MY MACHINE DOWN IN THE BED.LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK IT DONT LOOK LIKE MUCH ROOM UNDER THERE.
Parent - By snuffman (***) Date 09-29-2008 13:52
It will depend on how you want it to look when your done. Measure your skirts and find out how much room you will have underneath, but dont forget to pay attention to how close it will be to the tires. You can always get airbags or more springs to. You pick Shorthood2006 brain I believe he has a 05.

hi sandra.
Parent - By leterburn (**) Date 09-23-2008 00:31
thanks -
Parent - - By phaux (***) Date 09-23-2008 00:58
So you placed the deck directly on the truck frame? Does that cause any problems?
Parent - By leterburn (**) Date 09-23-2008 01:01
no....  built bulkheads - similar to fuselage (aircraft) construction..  toolboxes throughout.  Only the back end is tied into the hitch / rear frame mount - the welder sits on it's own z shaped brackets to barely clear the fuel tank and securely mounted - front bulkhead is tied into those as well as the front toolboxes (still have yet to cut access doors for them).  It's very strong as it turned out - I'd change a few things but not too many.  Lucke

Nobody knows exactly what the hell he is saying.
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 09-23-2008 01:53
I'm having trouble keeping up with two of these dudes, they lost me
Parent - - By leterburn (**) Date 09-23-2008 03:55
lol.... my bed is basically all toolboxes - no frame.  deck is tied into the tops of toolboxes - which in turn are tied into the rear end / hitch / and welder mount in the front.  Never took pics in construction but it works really good it's strong as well and fairly light. (think unibody construction rather than chassis frame)

I used to build truck flatbeds before I went to pipelining.... upwards of 300 / year.  On this one I basically started backwards - cut / fit all of my toolboxes around my wheels and frame.  Then capped off the top w/ the deck, sides, and rear.
Lucke

I got you, but still having trouble understanding the first dude,
Parent - By JPWHITTON (**) Date 09-23-2008 15:54
just saying i never built a bed before did not know you had to start with a frame first.I just started building top and sides.
Parent - - By leterburn (**) Date 09-23-2008 03:58
lol, guess you've gotta have aircraft experience like I have - ever have one of those balsa models??  start out w/ formers or bulkheads - gives it the curved bottom shape, then wrap the sides around them.  Topped off w/ deck.  Raining here today... but I'll see what I can do to take more pics - then it'll be clear.
Parent - - By phaux (***) Date 09-23-2008 04:07
More pics would be great, looking to get as many ideas as I can. Hopefully build one soon.
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 09-23-2008 10:51
There are several posts in shop talk with pics of beds in them
Parent - - By phaux (***) Date 09-23-2008 13:37
Ya, I've downloaded all those into a file. Was looking for some up close pics now, like where and how people attach it to the truck.
Parent - - By Sourdough (****) Date 09-24-2008 01:15
I still say this: what in the hell are we even talking about?

Frameless flatbeds?..........................................................................................
