I am studing for CWI test and I am having trouble understanding the section on maximum as detailed root face dimensions for a prequalified joint designation, the question is on B-p3-gf what is it and how can I understand it better?

B-P3-GF lists the root face as 1/8" min. For the detail listed you have two tolerances. First is the As Detailed (3.12.3 - 08) this is the tolerance allowed when detailing the joint. The tolerance is listed as +U, -0. This means that it can be detailed no smaller, but can be detailed unlimited in size (as long as all other prequalified requirements are met). The next tolerance is As Fit-Up. This is used during fabrication, + or - 1/16". So as detailed it could be 1/8" to unlimited. As Fit-Up it could be 1/16" to 3/16". Using all tolerances it could be 1/16" to unlimited. It is important to understand exactly what the question is asking.

hogan,
So with that said, the +U is still a minimum root face of 1/8" no matter what?  If the plate was 1 inch then the root face could be between 1/8 to 1 inch?  Then that wouldn't be a double groove then right.  It is a bit confusing, but I too am studying for the CWI.

I am assuming that a PJP square butt without the double V is not prequalified or it would be under Joint designation B-p1b  -GF, am I right?

Bryon,
You will also have a depth of bevel and depth of pen. that are required ( S(E) )in the welding symbol.

So the +U is not fully correct then.  If the root face is +U then there would be no bevel, right?
Also what is the difference in "As Detailed" and "As fit-up"?

The +U means it can go up any amount, like 1/4", 3/8" etc. with no limit. Whatever the weld size is, then determines the bevel size.
"As Detailed" is the tolerances allowed from the "Groove preperation"(the column to the left of "as detailed")
"As Fitup" is the tolerances from "As Detailed"

Depends on what Process, SMAW is prequalified, Also see note "e" for GMAW & FCAW

Ah yes, the pesky notes that I have been warned about repeatedly.  My interpretation of the now infamous "note e" is this, please correct me because as my week is going I am probably wrong:

note e:  "SMAW detailed joints may be used for prequalified GMAW (except GMAW-S) and FCAW."
My interpretation:  If there is no prequalified joint detail for FC or GMAW (not short circuiting) then one could use the SMAW and it would be kosher.?????

Correct!

hogan thanks that makes it easier to understand, but I am sure I will have more questions later.

Even if there is a prequalified joint for GMAW or FCAW, a prequalified joint for SMAW is considered to be prequalified with either GMAW or FCAW as well.
