I now have a picture of the smear.  This is off a titanium casting around .090" thick. Welded with around 80-100 amps.  2% thoriated tungsten 3/32 in size, ground according to specs.  All welding is performed in a vaccuum chamber.  All replies greatly appreciated.

Looks like a tungsten inclusion to me.

How big is the "smear"?

Are we saying that the entire half moon is tungsten (and the half moon is actually a V, the bottom of the half moon being the apex)? Or the distinct white spots?
