Is anyone out there a CWEng or know someone who is? I'm considering taking the test and I'd like to get as many opinions on how to prepare for the exam as possible.

Besides the list of references I can find no other direction on how to prepare. Ideas anyone?

I've thought about taking it myself sometime, but haven't as of yet. I would think that the cheap and easy to come by books that prepare you for the EIT or FE exam would be very helpfull.

I've got my EIT certificate therefore I'm exempt from parts 1 & 2 of the exam. What I'd like to know is how should I prepare for parts 3 & 4 of the exam. It would be really helpful if someone whose taken the test could give me some insight. Thanks

I was in on the intial preparation of the qualification document and know the subcommittee that produced it quite well. Since I've not taken the exam myself all I can tell you about the subject is it is extremely comprehensive and the subject matter was put together by some of the best minds in the industry! You may want to get in touch with Jim Harris of the AWS B5 Committee ~ if you don't have his e-mail address the B5 Secretary at AWS should be happy to put you in contact with Mr. Harris. Good luck!

This is a tough test but you can pass it. You must know processes, procedure writing, acceptance tests, etc. The fall edition of "Inspection Trends" has some info on courses for you. Good luck.

What I want to know is why AWS can't work with NCEES (http://www.ncees.org/) to establish a "Welding Engineer" exam for the Registered Professional Engineer? At one time the State of Ohio offered a P.E. exam for welding engineers, but I have not seen it listed recently. My only option, short of learning Civil or Mechanical Engineering, is to take the Metallurgical Engineer exam in order to obtain a license that would permit me to offer services as an "engineer" in my state (and most others). If I'm going to invest significant study time for a test as rigorous as the CWEng exam, it has to have significant value in return. The AWS CWEng is not recognized by the state in lieu of P.E. registration, nor is it likely to ever be. So, it has no real "value" other than one more piece of paper to hang on a wall or list on a resume. If AWS were to develop the study materials and refresher course for the P.E. exam and work with NCEES to develop exams, that would get more interest than the current AWS CWEng program. Look at the big picture AWS and consider the needs of the members, industry and the public, not just your own financial interest!

I'm curious. Does IIW offer a Welding Engineer certification or is it simply the syllabus that they offer?

I've been speaking with several people of trying to get an internationally recognised welding inspector certification on the books. IIW is looking into that issue by their Board of Directors and hopefully will decide to go with it.

Hmmmmmmm, I'd like to re-ask the question above to keep it alive; hope nobody minds but I'd like to get some sort of response!

This was found on the IIW webpage:

The IIW qualification scheme
One of the most recent evolution of the IIW is the setting-up of an international scheme for the Qualification of personnel involved in welding operations. This scheme allows the Authorised Nation Bodies (ANBs) to deliver, under the control of the IIW, Diplomas of International Welding Engineers, Technologists and Specialists. The certificates holders are de facto recognised as able to be welding co-ordinators according to the recent ISO Standards.

Hope this helps you out!
