Because I would think that joint configuration may dictate a minimum distance just due to geometry. I'm not aware of any such language in the AWS D1.1, AISC Structural Manual or in the Code of Standard Practice that spells out a min. distance per se'.

Not aware of D1.1 requirements on weld proximity, but there are obviously such requirements in industry and client specifications, so just make sure if such additional specifications may be applicable.
