First things first. Thanks to all for the help you have rendered to this new CWI as he tries to sort out all the "if's, and's, and/or but's" of the real world of weld inspection. This question relates to UT weld inspection, specifically laminations. I know it is a phenomenon related to plate. But what about other product forms such as pipe, I-beams, bar etc...?

Most pipes and I-Beams are made from plate so yes you could have laminaitons. As for the bars, I don't think so.
The pipe, if it is rolled, and plate should be checked for Laminaitons with UT prior to any angle beam UT.
It also depends on your specification. I have seen some specs that require lam checks on just about everything. Why? I don't know.

It depends on how severe a service the pipe will be submitted to (or at least, and keep it under your hat, how severe the spec writer thinks the service is).
