Those things don't apply to welding Kent.  How would we know anything about them??????

LOL.

What a day this is going to be...

Metallurgy... = Math

HAZ ....is not one zone but often as many as 16 zones.  I learned this just last week from Dr. Duane Miller when he was lecturing about where charpy's should be located.

Distortion...  It's cooling rates not heat input....  The key to metal movement is now yours!

To clarify one of Lawrence's notes, Metallurgy = geometry, algebra, occasionally calculus and differential equations, and a bit of black magic/squinting because we don't always know enough about the actual composition or local crystalline structure.

Same applies to distortion, but heavier on the black magic/squinting.

Correct Maggs....   Just meditating on metallurgy puts my brain into the "mushy" state.

I used the term "math" because once I enter the mushy state, monosyllabic communication is all I'm able to produce.

"the mushy state, monosyllabic communication"
Welcome to my state of mind
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 10-09-2017 19:22
"mushy"...something steel is not, not even in the HAZ.  It is the constant state of my mind after 4 years on swing shift but PTL that is changing as I am now on days.
Parent - - By Lawrence (*****) Date 10-09-2017 19:49
Mushy indeed :)

LOL...be careful with that austenite when it's been hitting the liquor

Kent,

As you've probably noticed by now, we're a bunch of wise-asses on here.  Your question, however, is broad enough to take several years of college courses and then work in the field to really begin to address.  Hope we've at least given you a laugh, if not useful information.

Matt,
I have both
college and field work
decades of it
you will find out soon Kent bait's a hook
to start a discussion
and I have had a couple discussion with John, Brent and Lawrence :twisted::evil::eek:
sincerely
Kent
and WELDcome to the world's greatest welding forum

"the mushy state, monosyllabic communication"
Agreed!

Hey Kent,
Here's a nibble on your hook...

Larry,
How do you this?
first Walt, now Duane:eek::cool::smile::yell::wink:
but you are one of best:cool::smile::yell:
that might be why you got Mr. Al Moore to buy you dinner:wink::cool:
sincerely,
Kent
btw 16 HAZ???  I just learned something:cool::smile:

Kent,

Duane humors me because I buy Powerwaves by the truckload.
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 10-12-2017 18:36
Wow, I would have liked to have been there for this one.  Duane really puts together some good presentations.

Matt, Kent has been around quite a spell.  Loves to start all kinds of things.  Lots of fun.

Should have paid attention to the signature.  Most of the old timers will sign their names and have signature lines on their posts.  Kent had both.

That's ok, happy to be a part of the forum.  Much better than being apart from it.

I'm pretty sure Henry knew plenty. As did Chuck. I dont frequent as much as I used too but a 'search' should  provide plenty of info?

dear members...
what is the corrective action for excess weld weaving width?
Parent - By Tyrone (***) Date 04-03-2018 11:19
Hey balaji,
Start a new thread. Don't add to someone else's topic.

Near the top is "Post".  Click on that.

[img][/img]how to find haz in monel alloys?
Parent - - By 803056 (*****) Date 08-07-2019 15:25
That's an Iron-Iron Carbide Equilibrium diagram I have seen before, at least not with all the labeling I see. I like it. Where can a get a copy Lawrence?

Al

Good Grief Al...….  That was two years ago..

I'm going to have to dig and pray to find it.

Had I been a bit more professional and cited the source this would not be a problem.  :(
Parent - By 803056 (*****) Date 08-08-2019 12:23
Don't bother, I just thought it was interesting because it included labels that are not typically included.

I generated one for my seminars where I included the typical temperature ranges for tempering and and stress relieving for the purpose of illustrating heating the steel to a temperature below the A1 (T1) is only going to reduce hardness. Increased hardness, ignoring the possibility of cold working, can only occur if the steel is heated above the A3 temperature and cooling it quickly.

I can add your labels to my sketch of the Iron-Iron Carbide diagram. More information is usually better.

Best regards - Al
