i currently use B31.3 and ASME IX for all of our welding needs as we are a large piping company. A customer is now asking for us to weld to D1.6 for pipe supports even very small supports. my question is since i dont know a ton about this code i bought a prequalified WPS from the AWS. do i simply need to test a welder to clause 3 and not worry about a PQR since its a prequalified procedure? Also im assuming like other codes a full pen pipe weld qwill qualify for unlimited fillets correct? thanks in advance!

First, buy a copy of D1.1.

Your welders will have to be requalified because D1.1 is more stringent with regards to the visual acceptance criteria.

The SWPS you purchased from AWS isn't going to tell you or the welder everything you need to know to make a code compliant weld. You need to review all the requirements as they apply to the work you are doing.

thanks for the reply. Wouldnt i only need D1.6 or do i need both since they go hand in hand? So do i not need a PQR since its prequalified?

Sorry for the typo. I should have typed D1.6. So, you need a copy D1.6 from stainless and D1.1 is there is any carbon or HSLA steel involved.

i have a codebook, but i cant find where it says anything about what a full pen groove weld will qualify for fillet weld size.

Look at 4.1.7. At least that's where you find in the D1.6:1999 edition. That's all I have available while I'm on the road.

Yup thats it! so if i understand this verbage correctly i can have my welder test on one of our pieces of SS pipe in the shop, bend test it to the D1.6 requirements and he will be good to go for the fillets needed on our pipe supports (1/4" fillets required). Agree?

That how it read it. Assuming all the other requirements are met.

Remember this. It is NOT a prequalified procedure until it is written! Some people assume they can weld using parameters within the range for prequalified WPS's without actually writing it down.

I'm niot saying thats what you are doing but I wanted to throw that out there.
