Does a 6010 root pass on plate qualify the welder for a backing plate according to D1.1?

Why should I quess what the details of the weld are?

A little more detail would be helpful. Are you welding plate or pipe, Are you welding an open root groove or a groove with backing? Is the joint a butt or T?

According to D1.1 if a welder passes a carbon steel pipe test using a 6010 root pass and 7018 filler and cap on a v groove in the 6g position, does this qualify them for the carbon steel structural plate test with backing using 7018 electrodes?

If the WPS for open root was qualified in accordance with AWS D1.1 and if the root was welded with 6010 and completed with 7018, there is no need to qualify the welder using a groove plate with 7018 if the governing code is D1.1.

One of the pieces of information you are not providing is the condition related to backing.

The filler metal being 6010 does not mean it was an open root joint.

If a joint was welded without backing during the performance qualification test, then the welder would be qualified with or without backing.

If backing was used, then the welder would only be qualified for cjp groove welds with backing.

Backing is not just a backing strip or ring. It could also be weld metal in double welded joints.

Have a good day!

Norrijdn,

Just make sure that 60 series electrodes are acceptable per your project specs. From my experience, when D1.1 is required, 60xx are not allowed for structural welds.

Keep an eye on the base materials, 60 ksi electrodes or non-lohy may be an issue.

Make sure EVERYTHING is in accordance with project specs!!!
