Has anyone recently taken the State of Ohio Welding Engineering PE exam? I would like to get a feel for what the test format is and types of material that will be covered. I am trying to locate reference or study guide material. I only need the PE portion. Many years ago I completed the EIT portion.

Thanks

Bulldog

Contact Terry Perez Director, AWS Certification Operations tperez@aws.org . AWS grades the Ohio Welding PE exam.

As far as format goes it was essay style (I believe it is the only engineering discipline that still utilizes this format).

For a list of suggested references look at the AWS Certified Welding Engineer information http://www.aws.org/certification/CWEng/cwenginfo.pdf . I borrowed many of them from the library read them and copied information from them.

Copy charts, tables graphics, from the references, into a three ring binder, eliminate the fluff, just take the good stuff.

References books that I had included; AWS Handbooks, ASM Handbook on Welding & Brazing, ASM Desk Reference, Casti Blue Book and a dictionary. Keep it light weight.

I had indexed three ring binders on Welding Metallurgy, NonDestructive Examination, a binder of many WPSs (that I developed over the years, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW, P1 to P91 material), Arc physics and power supplies and other welding methods.

Know your references and notes forwards and back, index them for quick reference. bring a snack and something to munch on during the exam (m & m's etc.) and pack a good lunch. It is a long arduous test.

Good Luck!

I know there is a PE in metallurgical engineering but have not heard of a PE in welding engineering. Ohio like most other states uses NCEES for exams for the Principles and Practices PE exam and I do not see welding engineering listed amongst the list of PE exams offered http://www.ncees.org/exams/professional/

Check with the Ohio state board if indeed they offer a PE in welding engineering. The link is http://www.ohiopeps.org/

The Welding Engineering exam in Ohio is not an NCEES exam. Since it is only offered in Ohio less than 5 people take it each year.

Here is a link to the ELSES website listing the fees and test days for the Welding Engineering PPE examination.

You are right. Ohio does offer the PE welding engineering exam through ELSES http://www.els-examreg.org/ohio.php

I imagine Ohio State Univeristy's welding engineering department had a lot of influence in setting this up.

"Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Services (ELSES, LLC) was formed by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to assist U.S. engineering and surveying licensing boards with the national exam administration and registration process." http://www.els-examreg.org/about_elses/
