I have fabricated a vessel out of SA516 Gr. 70 to operate at -48 0C temp. The weld procedure got qualified for impact test but one production coupon out of three got failed in weld metal impact test after PWHT. The vessel is designed and fabricated as per ASME sect. VIII Div. I. Can I go for retesting of production test coupon?

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Anant,

The spec A516 is used normally upto -45 C only. How are you using the vessel made out of A516 upto -48 C in the first place. I may be wrong, but am interested to know. What is the filler metal used for welding. At what temperaure was it tested. Have you checked the batch test certificate.

Anant, I think yo can go back for re-testing,(see UG-84 j).
AVBR1, I may be wrong but I think if the SA516-70 plate is .5" thick or less and normalized it can used at -48 C. The normalizing will put the mat'l in curve D UCS-66. I'm looking at a 2004 A05.
