Well,
Now that I have a least a few peoples (professionals) attention, I would like to propose a site where specific technical data may be shared with professionals such as yourselves. The Structural Engineers have a "List Server" in which technical problems may be resolved by pinging a group that share the list on a daily basis. This site is allright, but I would like to filter out some of the non-technical problems.

For instance, we have a Level III who has obvious knowledge on the subject of NDT within his respective discipline. I would like to hear from other SCWI's as well. I'm told we are few and far apart. I am a consultant and sometimes inspector or technician although I am doing less QC and much more QA. I feel I earned my SCWI certification, just as the individual with the CSWIP earned his qualification. Likewise with NDT III. By the way NDT, if I showed you the new FEMA requirements for SFRS sytems, I sure you would not be happy with their thoughts on Level III's. Many scoff at CWE's and the idea of a SCWI.

I have enjoyed some of the responses by you guys, and there technical accuracy is appreciated by those concerned. Swapping e-mail or website addresses is another possibility. But, I would like to limit who receives my e-mail or web addy. This is not a cliq or club, only a suggestion.

Any suggestions are welcome. Even if this does not take off, all constructive critisism is appreciated. For those who have responded, again, thanks.

(p.s. I'm exhausted, don't mind the spelling.)

I see everyone enjoys sharing credentials, how about any ideas or suggestions based on the original intent of this post?

I think the lack of response to your question, at least in my case, is that I really don't know how to answer it.
I agree that it might be valuable to have a forum that would be used primarily for inspectors. At times it would be good to consult other inspectors with code questions and such. I'm not sure an exclusive forum would be all that valuable to me (or that it wouldn't). I do feel that input from non-inspection people is very valuable, if for no other reason than to get their "read" on a topic. I have seen a few responses that I may not have agreed with but I still learned from them. When I see insults start to fly, I just stay out of it- it settles down quicker that way.

I do feel that it might be nice to have more direct access to AWS, ASME , and other code agencies. We always run into questions that don't seem to have answers and it sure would be good to have a way to get an authoratative answer. But I am also sure the D1.1 committee isn't going to expose themselves to liability by giving formal answers to informal questions.

Some other questions come up: How will list server access be paid for? Will I have to pay a fee for access? Who will administrate it? Would it be password access only? How will it be an improvement over what we have now? (Not that it would or would not be an improvement, but that some salesmanship will be necessary) Would there need to be a minimum traffic level to justify keeping it going?

I didn't feel I have time or resources to volunteer so I have been reluctant to comment until now. I didn't want my personal thoughts to influence whether or not your suggestion will fly if I am not positively contributing to it. Did you have some thoughts on how to make your idea happen? I'd like to hear about them.

Thanks for the input CHG,
The list server is just an example. This forum does not have to be at this site as well. Again, there are many solutions to this, just a few thoughts regarding this are posted. I would not want AWS or any other code councils involved DIRECTLY. They have a tendency to dismiss opinions or thoughts other than their own like some of those who use this forum.

And when the posts here start getting childish, obtuse or down right off tilt, or people start sending me their resumes without my knowledge at my e-mail addy or website, the original intent of the query is lost. I have many inspector, engineer and technician friends who would participate, as usual they do not want to do any of the footwork. That is the intention of this post.

I would also like to keep to the subject as much as possible to avoid boring anyone else who chooses to participate. While others enjoy and learn from some of the responses, I would like to be able to obtain or share specific technical information with others like yourself.

This concept really works, I have seen it. Again, it requires focus by all. As you can see by this forum, some responses do not get answered until days, weeks or months later, this is also what I am trying to avoid. My schedule does not permit me to check out the AWS forum daily, but I do check my e-mail daily unless my client dictates travel in the states or overseas. More to come. And again, thanks for the response. The rest may step up to the plate, maybe...

CWI since 1981. I think this forum works well here. That is it's intent and title.

I know that members of the Certification Committee periodically browse this area to keep in touch with the larger group. Not in a big brother way but as a peer association.

I hope you folks stay here and talk it up.

CWI since 1987 and currently teaching the trade Ive always taken pride
in being a part of for 26 yrs. I use the forum as a training aid by
printing out articals from experinced welders and pros in the field. They are a valuable resource for lecture topics and always reinforce my
message printed above my office door "Welding, the more ya know,
the more ya know ya don't know. Learn all ya can while your here."
