I'm writing a procurement spec. which will involve some welding of mild steel structures. I'm thinking of specifying welding to ASW D1.1. Is this correct? Is IHS AWSC the same thing? I'm not familiar with this second document. Can anyone tell me what it is?

I've never heard either. Are you sure you're not talking about AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction)? If so, get in touch with them through their site: www.AISC.org
Tell me how you got along

AWS D1.1 is the American Welding Society's Structural Welding Code. AWS D1.1 covers design, construction, and welding requirements of buildings as well as bridges, and also has a list of pre-qualified welded joint configurations. AWS B2.1 has a list of pre-qualified welding procedures. If you use one of them you do not have to perform a PQR. Only qualify your welders. But you must follow the procedures verbatim. If you change any essential variable, you must re-qualify your procedures. I am not familiar with the second standard you quoted.
