As its time to do our testing for D1.5 Fracture Critical WPSs, I was wondering what happened to the shielding gas Essential variable listed in Table 5.3 (1995 Edition) that states a change from a single gas to a gas mix requires re-qualification.   The 2002 Edition has changed without any note or indication that this requirement has been moved or eliminated all together.   I have searched through Section 4, 5, and 12 without finding any reference to the change or elimination.   I am looking for clarification that a PQR ran to AWS D1.5 2002 using 100% Co2 will qualify a gas mix on the WPS of 75%/25% Argon / Co2.   Any one out there have some advice?

See Table 5.1 and para 5.5.1.

My interpretation is that you cannot qualify a WPS that uses 75%Argon/25% CO2 with PQR tests run with 100% CO2, or vice versa.  100% CO2 versus 25% CO2 is greater than a 25% change.  You would have to run separate tests with each gas.

Look at table AWS D1.5 2002 Table 5.1-consumables.

Looks like changing from a single gas to a mixture requires WPS requalification.

Hope this helps,

That's a change in essential variable.
