If I have a WPS for piping works, P1 to P1 with combination of GTAW/SMAW process, qualified thickness range of base metal is 5.0 mm ~ 19.0 mm, and the deposited weld metal thickness range for groove is 8.00 mm for GTAW and 11mm for SMAW.  Is it applicable to use this WPS in welding shell plate of tank with thickness 15mm (P1 material) using SMAW process only?

Assuming you are welding to ASME IX (not D1 per the forum title), then it looks like you would have a problem welding 15mm material with SMAW since you can only deposit 11mm of weld metal.

I agree with Greg.

Edit: It makes me wonder why a PQR of such thin material was run considering it is a P1 / P1.  The base material of the original PQR was only 9.5mm thick?

ok..agree with both of you, thanks..... how about if the thickness of the shell plates ranges from 6mm to 10 mm, can I use the process of SMAW only instead of combination GTAW/SMAW? Is it allowed by the CODE?

I might have missed this, but is it a full penetration weld you intend to make?

it is not a full pen, but with a backweld.

For ASME applications, as long as all the essentail variables are within range (such as thicknesses), you can delete a process from a WPS without requalifying.  So if you thickness is within the range required for SMAW, you do not have to use the GTAW process.

ok. many thanks..

If this question is on D1.1 (which I do not think it is) then, an official interpretation on this issue was published on the 1990 code. If AWS would have changed its mind in the interim, I would expect to see something specifically in the code allowing this practice. Since I do not see anything like that in the 2006 edition, I can only assume the 1990 interpretation is still valid for the 2006 code.
