I have a project where I will need to weld to columns made of A440 steel. The 1962 AISC steel manual simply states that it is not recommended to weld to this material. Has anyone had any experience with preps and/or proceedures that allow welding of this material?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

A440 is a discontinued structural steel specificaion. It was discontinued in 1979. Do you have some existing material that must be welded?

The building is vintage 1962 and is to be retrofitted to current codes. Connections to be made to the existing columns will include tab gusset plates for new brace frames and reinforcing connections for existing beams.

DEPENDING ON THICKNESS USE TEMP STICKS PREHEAT TO 125 TO 250 DEGREES AND STICK WELD WITH 8018 RODS AND THAT SHOULD MEET WITH ANY INSPECTIONS
