Welding a canister approx. 3.0" dia. and .062 th'k, material is 6061 aluminum, process is pulse mig weld. The product is two parts press together and welded on one end. Using Argon gas and .035 dia. 4047 weld wire. the part is held in a vertical position. Have tried other wire combinations without success and many different torch angles.

Problem: The canister must hold a burst specification. when tested the part will burst below spec. in the weld. Need to have the part hold burst spec. and blow in the shell.

What can be done to improve the weld area to maintain a burst specification.

This application sounds similar to an automotive application for acccumultor canisters. They are presently being successfully welded and pass the burst test specifications at other manufacturing facilities. What is the test psi you need to achieve? What welding equipment are you now using? If you would like to discuss this application further off line please call me at 843-664-4248 or email at jdevito@esab.com.
