I am planning on taking my CWI in March or May.  I took a welding inspection course through a local college and feel confident to take the test without the seminar first.  I was wondering however which code (D1.1 or API 1104) have you guys felt was easier.

I have both but am curious of your opinions!!

Yeah easy is the wrong word!

What I meant was I have studied both for teaching my students.  I am more familiar with D1.1 but have heard others say that since API 1104 is smaller it might be better to take the code part on that.  I use the D1.1 more but have not read it through.  I have read the API 1104 from cover to cover.

I took my first test (30 years ago) using the API 1104 code. Mistake. I worked with AWS D-1.1 mostly and thought the same thing--- smaller code, easier test. I found that since API was small, they had to dig to find enough material for the test- thus questions that you would not normally consider studying for.
I missed the cut-off by 1 point on that test.
Take the test using the code that you predominately work with.
Good luck

Thanks Roger!

I use D1.1 more and that's probably the best code to use.  I also understand the number of questions went up for the code part from 46 to 60 something.

Does anyone know if that is correct?

I don't think the number of questions have increased. However,AWS has the  QC1 2006, there it shows to have 46 questions, but it shows an intering note. Check it out.
here is the link:
http://www.aws.org/certification/docs/certqc1-2006.pdf

Look up section 6. Note it says "Minimum number of questions"
good luck!

Yes the test now has 60 questions for API 1104.  I agree with UCSB that we will probably have to dig deeper to find answers.

D1.1 is so well indexed, this is the reason to use it.

Im not familiar with 1104..but I used it 12yrs ago. Just understand the question and immediately refer to the table of contents to get the page for answer. Don't use Tabs...this will only slow you to get the answer. The key is to undesrtand the table of contents.

Thanks Guys!

I'm glad I asked the question because I am more familiar with D1.1 but others suggested the API1104 because of the smaller book size.  I think I will stick with the D1.1.

Thanks Again!!

Why test on 500 pages worth of material when you can test on 100 pages worth?
I have seen several guys fail the D1.1 portion of the test.
Time is the enemy and if you tab the material in API 1104 it is easy to find and you will have
more time to go back and search or double check the answers.
Just one man's opinion who passed with API 1104.

The exam questions are taken from the main body of the D1.1 Code. The Annexes and the Commentary does not provide a basis for the exam questions. Therefore, the number of pages you have to be familiar with is reduced to about 230 pages.

I took the test in august using 1104. I am fairly familiar with the code and it still took me almost the whole 2 hours. And one question I figured and figured on, gave the answer right out of the code.

It's my impression that there is no real advantage one way or another. It depends on what your used to working with. If you have more time with D1.1 use it, or 1104 if thats what you have used more.

:)))

morning gentlement.
I am confused with your question..If people take an training course, because that people want to charge their brain., they always thirsty about knowledge...No matter how difficult that was...Because, study is likely a hoby.

Be the best...:)
