Hello everybody,

I am detailing a connection - its a steel plate welded to the face of a rectangular HSS column.  The plate is wider than the HSS so I will detail flare bevel welds on each side of the HSS at the plate.  Per AWS, I should show the weld designation with the format: S(E), size of bevel, S, and effective throat desired, (E).  Since I don't know the exact radius of the corners of the HSS (it varies slightly with manufacturing method), I was going to leave out the S callout and only show (E).

Does this make sense?

Thanks all.

I believe the radius is usually 2 times the thickness.
