Just wondering if calculators are allowed on the CWI exam.  If so, what calculator functions should I look for when I purchase one?  Thanks

As I recall they are allowed as long as they are non programmable. A basic scientific calc will due.

They ask questions that have big numbers and many decimal places. Most candidates cannot work this out in their heads. Least, those mere mortals I know.

I like the Texas Instrument TI-30 line of scientific calculators. The have all the functions you will need and they are easy to use. The typical price range is around $10.00 plus or minus a buck or two. Get the battery powered calculator, and if you have been using it for several months, replace the batteries before the examination. Solar powered calculators need enough light to operate and while every attempt is made to make sure there is adequate lighting at the test site, who needs to take that chance on the day of the examination?

I don't suggest buying a new calculator that you are unfamiliar with the evening before the examination. You may waste time looking for function keys which may make a difference in the niumber of questions you are able to answer. Remember, you only have so many minutes to answer the questions correctly.

Good luck - Al

It's not that I can't do the math by hand.  Since the test is timed, I figure I'd use all the tools allowed.
I'm paying for this myself and I'm pretty nervous.

Thanks

I was thinking about getting one of those Contractor Calculators that do all the conversions.

I just took the test 3 days ago.  All you need is a basic scientific calculator.

If I am not mistakin, most of the contractor calculators are programmable.

If the calculator will add, subtract, multiply and divide, it will work. None of the questions asked are that hard where a calculator with a bunch of bells and whistles would be required. And if you dont know what all those button thingges do, they could result in misspressen a cos. when you wanted to divide. SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE

I'm not sure if calculators like a "contractors" are allowed because they usually have one button metric conversion capabilities.

While on that subject, remember that you need to select the "most correct" answer from the choices.  I recall several questions where one of the answers was expressed in metric form, so take the time to do the conversion.

thanks for the test tip .  I have the study guide and the sample question answers involve the conversion as you mentioned.  I'll get the standard scientific calculator.
