Question: Corner joint C-U2a-GF (pg 92 D1.1 2006)

Can this joint be used in the horizontal 2G position w/ FCAW?

Welding Process =FCAW, E71T-1 gas shielded, pre-qualifed wps only, root opening 1/4" minimum.

My original answer was "no" because "allowed welding position" column lists F,V OH it doesn't say H=horizontal.  But then I read further into the code and note "E" says "SMAW detailed joints may be used for pre-qualified FCAW".  So if SMAW can be used in "ALL" positions, and SMAW joints can be used for FCAW, I should be able to use FCAW in all positions right?  As long as I go w/ the approtiate r/o and bevel angle (which would be 1/4 r/o and 45 degree)

Thanks Chris

For horizontal...I think you would have to change the angle and root opening to comply with a TC-U4a-GF configuration.

Chris,
I would agree with your interpretation that you can use C-U2a with 1/4" root opening & 45 deg angle in horizontal with FCAW.

i don't know if you'll meet the rotation of face required in figure 4.1
