I'm looking for a consensus on how this is handled. I assume this is a fairly common application.
I have a plate butt joint (thickness > 5/8") I wish to prequal and perform with SAW on the first side and GMAW on the second side after backgouge. Square butt is out of the question due to the T max of 5/8". So, I wish to provide a partial V groove bevel (> 1/4 of the Mat'l T) for the SAW (first side) and then backgouge the non beveled seam of the second side with GMAW, in conformance with a U groove.
Is it usual practice to write this as a B-U3c-S, followed by a B-U7-GF, just neglecting the second bevel when the SAW is being welded on the first side and neglecting the first U when backgouging for the second GMAW side?
