HELLO,
ACCORDING TO THE CODE, IT SPECIFIED ME THAT THE RECOMMENDED ALLOY FOR QUALIFICATION OF Heat treatable aluminum alloys IS AL 6061, BUT I HAVE SEEN THAT THIS ALLOY HAS SOME HEAT TREATMENTS THAT THE CODE DOESN´T SPECIFY, WHICH IS THE RECOMMENDED HEAT TREATMENT FOR THIS ALLOY FOR A QUALIFICATION PROCESS? OR IS IT DEPENDS OF OUR APPLICATIONS? OR IT MUST NOT HAVE HEAT TREATMENT?

THANK YOU

Its been my experience that we didn't heat treat the 6061-T6 after welding. We welded the sample for qualifying the procedure and qualified the welders using the WPS developed based on the PQR. All were in the as welded condition.

Only in one case did we heat treat the 6061 after welding. Note that it will never regain the mechanical properties of the T6 condition after welding.

You have to be careful when you do your bend testing. The bend radius is not the same as it is for other base metal/filler metal combinations. You will also have to machine the bend samples if they are thicker than 1/8 inch.

Study AWS B2.1 carefully for the requirements of how to qualify the procedure.

Best regards - Al

It is usually easy to procure.
