Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Technical Standards & Publications / WPS For ASTM A53 GrB Black Pipe

Previously I've posted the same topic under technical. Now i found the right board to write.

I have set of wps for A106 GrB. In my new project, I have to weld A53 Gr.B. This P-1 to P-1 & Gr-1 to Gr-1 substitution. Is it OK.

Yes.

If you are asking whether you can revise the WPS to include A53 pipe per ASME Section IX, the answer is yes.

If the question is whether you can substitute A53 for A106 pipe on the job, the question is more complex. A53 is a carbon steel alloy that may not be appropriate for high temperature applications. A106 contains manganese as an alloying addition (as well as carbon) and is more appropriate for elevated temperatures. Substitution must be given serious consideration. Just because both are considered to be P-1 Grp 1 materials does not mean they can be substituted without reevaluating the operating conditions.

Sorry to go in another direction from you initial question, but we never know the entire story until we put the information on the table.

Best regards - Al

Good points, as usual Al.

The A53 pipe is the designed pipe materials. No substitution for material. I only have WPS for A106 matl and I am checking the WPS applicable to A53 pipe.

An editorial revision is all that is required.
