We have an order for welding some specialized chrome plated hand tools (wrenches, sockets, extensions and the like). Tools are made of ASTM A29 Grade 50B44. We will TIG weld.  I have an old reference in our file for using filler ER308 (no PQR), whereas I would have expected to use something on the order of a 70S-6.

Can anyone confirm use of 308 as a viable filler? Obviously terrific strength is not an issue in the welds, would compatibility with chrome plating be the consideration?

Thankyou for any advice offered.

Amongst the less enlightened welders, if You are trying to join hard to weld steels, high alloys, unknown alloys, cast iron, etc. lacking all the information and the absolutly best fillers for the job, there is a pretty good chance You can get it to hold together with stainless.
