In D1.1 2006 Para 4.32.1.3 it is indicated that "Welders have the option of using a test thickness of 3/8 in. to qualifiy any production welding thickness greater than or equal to 1/8".

The statement and the rest of the paragraph make no reference previously qualified processes, positions etc. I am having a hard time understanding what the paragraph means. I could take it to mean regardless of what I was qualified at before, taking a test on 3/8" plate will qualify me to weld on ANY thickness.

The similar statement in ASME Sec IX is pretty clear to me but this one is a stumper. We have a guy returning to work tomorrow that I am going to be testing.

Thanks

Gerald

Hi Gerald,
C4.1.3.1 gives a little insight to the paragraph 4.32.1.3. (Also see Paragraph 4.1.3.1 where it originally references  paragraph 4.32.1)

Basically if the period of effectiveness has lasped, you could re-instate the welder's qualification if the welder passes the same test on 3/8" material vs making the welder test again on 1" material....at least that is what I get out of reading that...

Mr. Wright, I hope your right because this is the same interpretation I've been using fo several years now, luckily I've used this only twice in the last four years.

So basically there is no advantage with this paragraph unless the original qualification was done on material greater than 3/8".
