Looking into taking my SCWI.

They have a list as long as your arm of the books the questions come out of.

That bucket of books is also a bit expensive.

What do I really need to study?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Can't help you. I started to take the SCWI and they told me I would get a new cert # so I told them no thanks. not too many of the 76'ers around anymore. besides that why mess up a good thing.

I have not figured out exactly what the SCWI is! I do not know anyone looking for them nor paying more to have the certification. If it is a prestige thing, API sells those for $750 a certification and it WILL add $$$ to your pocket

It's that cert you get so you can write welding procedures and inspection requirements.  You can't do those with out the "S"!!  :)

new tito , i think they changed or are going to change that so you have to have the S to do what we all have been doing all these years . when ed bonhart was up in (i think it was march ) he had a presentation and had information on this subject . i'll have to dig thru my stuff and let you know what i got out of it . too busy right now to do that . keep me posted on what you find out . good luck . willie

I am a little confused. Is this in D1.1 that only a SCWI can write welding and inspection procedures? Can you cite the section? I have been writing API 1104 and section IX procedures fro years and review 3-5 WPS and PQR's per week. These are section IX though. I am wondering about the certification as I have seen no one requiring it for positions.

There is no such requirement in any Code.  It is specified in the Welding Inspector Qualification document as a task the SCWI will be deemed to be capable of performing.  Don't worry about it if you are already doing this task!

New  Tito
Not Correct.
It is the only certification where you are deemed to be qualified to write WPS' and WPQRs & inspection procedures.
Many CWIs, as well as many non-certified persons, have been doing it for years.
Be aware, there are many questions from B2.1 and ISO 9000.

I was only kidding.  :)

My personal experience in taking the SCWI was there were many, many questions from the Annex of D10.4:

"Welding Austenitic Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Piping and Tubing"

ANSI Approved. Published 1986, Reaffirmed 2000, 34 pages.
$73.00

has anyone seen  the scwi required on a job or a job offer requiring it?
Parent - - By jon20013 (*****) Date 06-15-2007 17:21
I have seen several job offers specifying SCWI.
Parent - - By hogan (****) Date 06-15-2007 17:46
is there a certain type of work that seems to be specifying the requirement for a scwi more that others ?
Parent - By jon20013 (*****) Date 06-15-2007 17:56
Not that I've noticed, the few that I've seen I didn't pay too much attention to but if you go to the job search engines you may be able to further define.

Do you mean the API certs for tank and vessel insp. Are the tests so easy that you consider them "for sale"

Brande,

I have been a SCWI sience May 2004, I can tell you that the exam has only about 2 questions that deal with actual inspection, the remaining questions deal wiht cost of quality, ISO 9000, NDE, Lots of metalurgy, Code interpertation, and procedure writing (NDE, Welding and Inspection).  As for study material, ger as much of the AWS referanced materials you can and read it over and over.

Good Luck!
