Looking to buy software for small shop/field environment for ASME IX, B31.1 and D1.1. Mainly to qualify welders, WPS maybe an occasional PQR.

I have searched the web & know you get what you pay for. Money is a factor but would pay the price if that was the way to go. Would like bell & whistles but don't know how much we would use them. Not dealing with lots of welders (5-10). I will not have time to reinvent the wheel. Even if I did it wouldn't be round :)

I want to learn the job of CWI (passed last August) but I work mainly as supv. and still weld & fit when necessary. Was curious if the software helps you or prevents you from learning the ropes?

Reading about it on web sites or in magazines are one thing but useing them are another. I know alot of you have experience with some of the software out there. Any reccomendations on what to look for or what not to buy are appreciated.

The software that does the code checking could go either way with helping or hurting. I my opinion, the software should be used to assist with a process (Welding Record keeping) that you already can do. I have only used C-Specs and Lincoln Arcworks as far as commercial applications go. I like C-Spec. It is a much larger investment.

I have a list of the common ones at http://weldinginspectionsvcs.com/otherPeoplesWeldingSoftware.htm but some may be out of date. I just updated it but the server takes its own yime updating. One that I added was http://www.wpsamerica.com/demo.php that appeared to be an online WPS program. I didn't check it out much.

Have a good day

Gerald

Thank you pipewelder_1999, for addressing (http://www.WPSAmerica.com).  Please view both demo (1 for prequalified WPS & 2 for custom welding procedures).

Here is general info:

WPSAmerica.com (http://www.WPSAmerica.com) is offering welding procedures software, supporting multiple structural steel welding codes.

-There are over 10,000 prequalified Welding Procedure Specifications (pWPS) available in database, code-checked with AWS D1.1, AWS D1.3 or AWS D1.6 for welding of carbon steel or stainless steel (Pipe, Sheet, Plate).

-Any types of welding procedure can be created online, by using industry standard drop-down featured forms (WPS, PQR), database of base metals, filler metals and pre-drawn joint sketches library.

-You can also create your own Web page, [WPSAmerica.com/YOU], and start collaborate with welding community.

-New features or value-added services are always on the way to benefit members.

Thank you....Hamilton

Just my opinion, (maybe I'm just old) but I always thought those things were more trouble than their worth. A few Excel templates and homogenizing your continuity in time always seemed to take less time than navigating those things and their inevitable glitches and idiosyncracies.

And as for code updates, just never really needed it. For ASME you really should be readin pink and blue anyhow.

Check out Hamilton's site again. I spoke with him earlier and he was considering a price "decrease".

If you don't need code checking then I may have something that will work for you if you have MS Access 2000 or Later. I can send you a demo or one of the free ones that you can check out.

We do have Access and I would like to get the demo. We use to outsource all testing/WPS needs so it wasn't totally our responsibility to check code. I'm going to do the testing from now on. Code checking would help since I'm new at this and have no supervision to oversee things. But that is where the forum comes in. At this time we are not doing lots of exotic metals, processes, etc. that would require too much experience. Also would not be using software all that often so spending thousands may not be necessary at this time. Thanks again for the help.

Tim,
Email Hamilton, if you are interested in his services. The price he quoted me sounds very doable for smaller companies like I work for. But he doesn't have all of the codes worked out yet, at leaste the one's that I'm needing help with at the moment.

Just emailed him. Thanks John

To all of you experienced CWI's; is there an industry preference on software used for wps/pqrs etc.? You know like Word and EXEL is for word processing and spreadsheets. Or is that not the case. Not that I plan on going anywhere but would like to be familiar with it just encase I ever need to be. Or does this have little to no affect on the average CWI job in the industry?
Thanks

I don't have a lot of experience writind WPS' and PQR's, but I will say that the few I have done have been in Excel.  I basically started from scratch not knowing much about excel or how to write WPS' and PQR's.  I will say though, I can promise you that I learned much more figuring it out myself thumbing through the code book than I would have if I had a program that filled most of it out for me.

i use a word template for my wps/pqrs. it's simple and efficient.

Here is a demo that works till July http://weldinginspectionsvcs.com/FtpPublic/ASMEWeldDataBAse2p0.zip .

There is some other versions that you may be able to build off of yourself.

Hi guys:

This is Hamilton, founder of http://WWW.WPSAMERICA.COM

Thank you for those who contacted me from this board.

Here is an update about WPSAmerica's Welding Software (WPS, PQR):

-Now WPSAmerica's software support all D1 Series Codes (D1.1, D1.2, D1.3, D1.5, D1.6, D9.1) for welding of any steel types and grades, steel sheets, stainless steel and aluminum welding.  New welding joints (Sketches) for Fillet, CJP & PJP have been added for all D1 Series, including an update on database of Filler Metal & Base Metal

Please see both Demo 1 (prequalified WPS) & Demo 2 (custom forms for WPS, PQR) for AWS Codes.

-Also welding community has been added.   There are lots of good stuff about welding, presentations, articles, news, members' profile, links, etc. (it's free).  Each member has a Web page that can add video, pictures, text, etc. about their company's product or services.  For instance, you can see my profile by click on WPSAmeri from the community members list or at: http://www.WPSAmerica.com/user/wpsameri

We are working to add ASME Section IX Code in a month or sooner; I will update Forum once ASME become available to users.

Best Regards....Hamilton
