Ok we're welding some Armox 500T plate.  We were using Hardox 500 plate with an 80k tensile wire.  This new armox plate requires preheat if we keep using a ferretic consumable.  If we go to an austenetic consumable we can weld it at room temperature.  The stainless wire they recomend is an AWS A/SFA 5.4-92 E307-15 or a AWS A 5.22 E307 LT-2.
My question is can you cross reference this wire with another more common A 5.22 T series wire like aN E308 or E309LT1-1.  Esab makes an E307TO-03 and an E308TO-03 for welding armor plate, but i don't know how hard it would be to get and i need some wire fast like everything else ya know.;-) Second question is i haven't seen a wire discription like this meaning no # after the T and would using a 307TO-03 really be any different then using the wire they stated on the armox website (E307 LT-2)?

Thanks, Kix

Hello Kix.
I did recently an study about MIL A46100 weldability using the following filler metals: Eutectic 680, E312, E307, E11018M and E308MoL.  Among conclusions about it is that you can't expect the same level of hardness and ballistic performance in your weld metal as the base metal.  The same with the low hardness overtempered region at HAZ, wich we are trying to reduce using GMAW-spray in order to obtain a soft zone wide lower than the bullet diameter.  May be if you give us the chemical and properties of your base metal we can help you more effectively.

They decided to keep using the same flux cored wire we were using on the hardox 500 and just preheat.  I guess te stainless wire was just to expensive.
