Some tips for preparation
1. Get the examination application package first
2. The package provides information regarding exam content...what references are required, exam format etc. Make sure you have all exam references.
3. Some of the exam reference materials are included in the package and can also be downloaded from www.ladbs.org. You will have to purchase the LA City Building Code. And since you are already ICC certified, I am sure you have the AISC 9th edition, and AWS D1.1, D1.3, D1.4, and A2.4
4. The exam is part written and part oral. As you are aware, there is no plan reading. The multiple choice written exam is given first....followed by the oral exam.
5. Even though the written exam is slightly more difficult than ICC's legacy open book exam, it is easier than the oral exm.
6. The oral exam can be very rigorous, covering a lot of ground, and may be based on information you will not find in the exam reference materials (and that's where your work experience comes into play). During the oral exam, once they get a sense that you are a pro, it will get easier.
7. It helps if you have done some structural steel inspection in another jurisdiction for at least 1 year, fully comprehend inspection procedures, understand LA City regulations, have some welding background, and are a CWI (even though it is not required...oral examiners will respect the fact that you have it).
8. Finally, it does not hurt to talk to collegues who have taken the exam.
If you are prepared and confident (but not cocky...as examiners may not take to kindly to that), it will not be a problem.
