We are welding a 3" 6061  channel shaped aluminum extrusion with a .187" wall thickness. The weld made with a 5356 alloy is ground flush and buffed with a surface conditioning (scotchbrite) disc. After a satin annodizing we are finding on average 3 pcs per 200 with a dark grey "Halo" formed around the weld area in the base metal . The anodized welds on these Halo'd parts looks as it should but, 3/16 from the welds edge the dark grey halo forms and extends out 3/8 then fades. Anybody ever see this before?

you're running 3/16 thick, git er done. Don't know what country you're from, but git er done...........Hey, pre heat the sucker and see what happens. So many times aluminum welds are made too cold. Why not make 'em hot, and not have to worry about it. Change the policy, or sumthin............Make it hot!
