I understand that with parallel electrodes that the kiljoules are added together, but with tandem electodes do you add the kilijoules together?  There is a 4 inch spacing between electodes in this application.

Heat input would have to do with whether or not the electrodes are contributing energy to the same puddle. The idea being the energy involved in determining mechanical properties and microstructure. In your case with a 4 inch spread I would say that the leading puddle is solidified and therefore the trailing puddle is to be considered seperately.
