I sometimes weld repair local docks that are steel. I have a small welder and can near the dock and drag miles of cable out to the fingers for a small spot of weld. That's a real pain in the butt. About 20 or 30 years ago I tried out a welder that was powered by a chainsaw type motor. It would only run 3/32 rod. I thought at the time that it was a toy but what I would give for one now. I could put it in a boat and row around and weld right there.
Has anyone out there seen such a critter recently?

Well, not exactly like that...but I use my Hobart Handler 135 running off a Honda generator to make some of those welds like you are speaking of.

There is a company by the name of Ready welder out of California. They manufacturer a spoolgun type welder that you connect to a couple of Marine/Deep Cycle auto Batteries. Alot of four wheeler & jeep enthusiasts love these compact units. Hope this helps

Try Zena incorporated They make a backpack welder that you just strap on your back an it goes any where.Gas powered too.It really looks like a awsome machine. Not sure of the price tag.I guess it would depend on how much you use it verse the cost.100% duty cycle i think too.Good luck on your search,

Thanks guys
I'll look at that stuff. I am also thinking of rolling my own with a truck alternator and a small engine.
