We have tested to A53 Gr.B which qualifies us to weld any group I material listed in table 3.1 of D1.1.  We are currently welding pipe...A252 Gr. 3 material but cannot seem to locate the material in table 3.1 under any group.  Does that mean we have to retest to weld A252 Gr. 3?  A252 Gr. 3 should be equivalent to group I materials.  Although, the copy of D1.1 I am referring to is an older copy.  I am hoping it's included in the newer edition.

Sorry, A-252 Gr. 3 is not a prequalified base metal under D1.1-2006.  You will have to run a procedure qualification for this specification and grade of material.

If the chemical composition of the A252 Grade 3 falls within the chemical composition range of a steel that is prequalified in D1.1, it can be used in a prequalified WPS, if approved by the EOR.  Any preheat requirements would also be in accordance with the prequalified minimum preheat and interpass temperature.  Just a thought.

Thanks for the quick replies! Appreciate it.

That's going to be the problem - I believe A252 has little or no controls on chemical composition.
