Does AWS have a specification concerning the storage of welding consumables?
Parent - By Jorge Giraldo (**) Date 06-10-2001 15:20

Hello Doc:

I don't know if there is an AWS particular specification about it, but on each Welding Code you can obtain the requirements related with the storage and handling of welding consumables and electrodes. For example, in AWS D1.1-96, Chapter 5 FABRICATION you can find these issues at paragraph 5.3; you can see different requirements about it in the AWS D1.5, and so on. The requirements may be differents according the application (kind of structure, specific code, etc.), but all of them can serve you as a basis for what you need. I hope this help you.

Doc, The storage of Electodes are allways best stored in their un-opened box, but after openning If they are to be used for code welding they must be heated to a predetermand temp before use.If your useing 7018 preheat temp is 250 degrees.if they have been exposed to moisture you must preheat to 350 for 1/2 hour. You can find the standard in the D1.1 code book, look in the Index under filler metal or electrodes for guidance. Good Luck David

Jorge Giraldo and Iron Man are absolutely right. Problem is, however, that not always you've got the codes and standards on hand. In this case, best thing to do is to follow the electrodes manufacturer's instructions, which obviously will be in full accordance with the codes. If the instructions aren't written in the electrode box, the manufacturer's telephone will be for sure. Give him a call and ask for his instructions.
