Welder Performance Test With Copper Nickel Filler

Hi All,
I am in need to qualify a welder with a ERCuNi filler on a tig procedure. Purpose will be for a ASME B31 copper nickel pipe job coming up. I would prefer to get this test going right now using a groove weld plate test and RT examination as permitted by QW-304 (we have no pipe for the test right now).

What alternate plate material might be applicable now for this test?

You can use carbon steel base metal depending upon the P No. of your Monel.
QW-423.1 P1 to P11, P34, P41 to P49.
And consistent with threads in this forum its up to yuo to decide if this is representative of the skills necessary for your alloy. If its 70-30 its P34.

90-10 is P34 also.

If you are qualifying for ASME then you may be restricted on your minimum diameter. As others have said, P1 materials are fine for performance qualification.

Thanks Folks-
The upcoming job will be 70-30. It strikes me so odd that welding ERCuNi on A-36 permits a welder to qualify on Cu-Ni, but since it is permitted in QW-423, I will take advantage. I certainly understand there is a skill level that may get overlooked when substituting materials on a performance test and would usually opt for the actual production condition when possible, but in this case we will be qualifying one of our very best so I really have no concerns.

I do believe the carbon steel makes the qual a bit easier. But, Monels can be a booger for the uninitiated. The CS won't help much if your welder ain't close to the skill level necessary.
