I know I aced the 1104 Code part, pretty sure about the Fundamentals, but that Practical pretty much stressed me out! For starters, the V-Wac gauge they gave me wouldn't go to 0 on a flat surface, so I was trying to add approximately a 64th to every measurement. I messed around with that till I couldn't take it anymore and requested a different one, which I got, no problem. I tried to go back and recheck all the ones I already answered with the bad gauge, but by then time was running out and I was getting stressed.
Don't know if I passed it or not. They had a couple of pictures asking what type of UT was being used, I just had to guess on those two.
That butt weld plate coupon sure was ugly!!!
Now the waiting begins...
good luck on your exam, i too thought the practical was tough, and i have been measuring welds for a long time, been 2 weeks and the only new names on the cwi quik check or all korean or chinese and i've only seen the site updated so far on saturdays. looks like i got another week before finding out.
BTW, if you want to start checking, 07102001 is the highest number to date, so start with 07102011!
good luck to both of you guy's ,ctacker and ZCat on the exam
from reading responses and post from the both of you
I'm sure there will be no problem.
Thanks, strat, but I'm not all that sure about that practical. You only get to miss 12, wouldn't be too hard to do.
thanks strat. & Congratulations to you and everyone else that passed!
hey ctacker,
how's it goin, are ya pullin' your hair out yet?
the numbers that start with 0710 are only for people that took the test in september...for the people that took it in october (like you and me) the numbers will start with 0711, because your cert goes into effect the month after you tested...when i checked this morning the numbers went upto 07110191, but neither of our names were on it. hopefully they just haven't got to us yet.
and i agree the practical sucked i thought the fundamentals was the easiest part...not that it was easy just the "easiest part"
Who did you guys have for an instructor?
i tested only, no instructor!
my instructors name is richard campbell and he was top notch
he is a very likable guy, he stuck to the topics at hand and made it very interesting. you could tell he loved what he did.
i have very high respect for him (even though he said that i scare him and would not elaborate as to why).lol
i would definitely reccommend taking the seminar when he will be the instructor...
I thought the code was the easiest. I was taking my time, looking up everything even if I remembered the answer. Took my time to make sure I filled in the right answer and still finished 30 minutes early. Somebody said the 1104 was easier than the D1, must be, because most of the other guys were doing the D1 and I was the first one to finish.
I was the last guy in the Practical part, everybody else done already finished and left.
Man, there is a bunch of CAWI's on there...
Hey Brian, thanks for the info, i feel like a fool now looking all thru oct,lol but the numbers don t stop at 019, they just skip 020.
check 042 and 047 and you will see we both passed!
never had any doubt! (yea right!)
btw, the way we both look, we pulled our hair out long ago!!!
Gentlemen, CONGRATULATIONS! Best regards, Allan
Congratulations Brian and ctacker!
big congrats to ya ctacker:)
and thanks to every one for the congrats and the pre exam advice
btw... ctacker thanx for being obsessed with finding out if you passed 'cause when names quit showin' up at 20 i quit lookin'...lol
Good Job Guys! Congrats on passing!
Look out world, here they come!
Good job guys!
Al
I PASSED, TOO!!!
I was sweating that practical, boy!
Excellent Zcat;
Now, what did you do to prepare for the examination? What books did you use, how many hours of preparation, etc. Others will want to know!
Best regards - Al
I used the Welding Inspection Technology book, the Visual Inspection Workshop book and the 1104 study guide. I studied quite a bit and took all the practice tests several times over till could get them all right.
Sure felt good to see my name come up on the CWI Quick Check, I didn't want to see a 2 or a 4 at the end of my number.
More details lad. Did you take the CWI seminar, where did you take the seminar, did you self-study before the seminar, an estimate of how many hours of preparation did you put in?
We want to know. You clearly did prepare yourself or you wouldn't have passed one of the toughest exams in the industry.
Best regards - Al
I didn't do the seminar, went straight to the test. I would estimate 30 or 40 hours of studying, I guess, I didn't really keep track. I spent quite a few hours studying the 1104, I would read it at bedtime, it never failed to put me to sleep.
Bought a cheap micrometer and caliper and machinist ruler on eBay so I could get familiar with that beforehand.
There you go, that's the type of information people preparing for the test will be looking for.
Did you have any difficulty with the math or converting from U.S. customary units to metric and vice versa?
How did you prepare for the practical other than practicing with you micrometer and calipers?
Best regards - Al
Nope, didn't have any problems with the math, as you know they give you all the formulas you need. I didn't really have a way to prepare for the practical other than reading the workshop book and doing the practice tests. I had used fillet gauges on the job at the South Texas nuke way back in the early 80's.
I studied that little green book quite a bit, too.
That Visual Inspection Workshop book is a must have, thanks to ctacker for recommending that one to me.
Good information to know.
Thanks - Al
WTG Zcat, i knew you could do it!
Thanks, you guys!
phew!!!
Thanks, Brian. I might already have gotten an inspecting job. Drove out here to Wood River, NE. ethanol plant to take a weld test and they need some CWI's. The head inspector is gonna talk to the big boss and see what kind of money he's willing to pay. Passed the weld test this morning, see about inspecting tomorrow!
