I am giving advise to a friend who is taking a test for a 8" 5p root, low and high cover. I want to give him th best advise available and not sure how to start this pipe. It has been some years since I welded and he is asking me if he should start from the top or bottom and I cant remember or remember what a 5p is. Can anyone help me out. He is a very good friend of mine. be very specific.

You can weld uphill or downhill with 6010. If you can find out from the one giving the test I'm sure you will get some good advise here. 5P and 5p+ (E6010) are rods often used for root pass welding as they have very good penetrating characteristics.
