What non-destructive test methods are appropriate for evaluating friction welds?  Where might I find more information?  Thank you.

Jennifer

Welcome to the forum

There are quite a few ways to make a friction weld and many more ways to make resistance welds...  You need to provide more information if you want a specific reply.

But here is one thought.

AWS C6.2/C6.2M:2006 SPECIFICATION FOR FRICTION WELDING OF METALS

or

AWS C1.4M/C1.4 SPECIFICATION FOR RESISTANCE WELDING OF CARBON AND LOW-ALLOY STEELS

or

AWS D8.1M:2007, Specification for Automotive Weld Quality and Resistance Spot Welding of Steel,
or
AWS D17.2/ D17.2M:2007, Specification for Resistance Welding for Aerospace Applications

Thank you for the quick reply! We are friction welding hollow drill mining grade steel (small end spins and is pressed against longer end; the process is new to us (inherited from sister plant), and I'm not familiar with all the methods of friction welding).  We are currently using bend tests to evaluate set-up first-off's - which works for our application - but wish to reduce set-up/test times by employing non-destructive methods.

I would have to preface my statement in that I can't say as I know what code that would go to if any.
However; I have tested some devices in the nuclear realm (CRDM stalks) in which a similar method was used to put them together.
For them, they used UT, and PT.

Without knowing specific friction weld information which can allow a more specific answer, Selection of an NDE method(s) will be affected by type of flaw, AQL for the same, and the POD for the method. (acceptable quality level/probability of detection both of which run hand in hand).

Gerald
