Are Spray and Globular different modes of transfer? If they are, then this would be an essential variable for the WPS and the welder can only weld in this mode.

As hogan asks, what code are you working to? It is an answer that is code dependent.

We are testing welders to D1.1. We are also using 95% argon/5% O2 which I think is mainly for Spray.

The mode of transfer is not an essential variable for welder qualification unless you are switching to or from short circuiting transfer. It is an essential variable for the WPS.

Review Table 4.12 if you are using D1.1-2006.
