i was reading the d1.1 and it shows 6g is an open root, but 6gr requires a backing, why is this?

Maybe I'm missing something, but looking at AWS D1.1-2006 and the figures 4.27, 4.28, and 4.29, I don't see a backing indicated.

Best regards - Al

i dont have the book in front of me, but if you are looking at the diagrams it shows a backing strip welding symbol, for 6gr, and on 6g, it shows none: ie open root.

i will have to wait a week, before i look at the book again, as we have a 4 day weekend.

Some people have all the luck!

I've got the 2006 edition of D1.1 in front of me and there is no backing indicated by the welding symbol in any of the three figures I listed (4.27, 4.28., 4.29).

I already mentioned this in another thread, but it is worth repeating; always provide the specific code and the year or the edition you are using when asking a code related question. The reason the new code is published every two years is to incorporate changes that have been approved by the code committees. You could very well be looking at a different edition, or possibly a different code than I am.

Happy Thanksgiving

6GR R is the restriction ring not a backing ring. made for welders that will weld with out the possiblity of being able to acces the weld from the back. like say for instance a jacket brace can not be back gaulged (or how ever ya spell it) so that would be a welder quailified for 6gr

it is definately d1.1, revision not sure. as for the "R" in 6gr, i know it stands for restriction, that was not the question. i will get the revision year, page numbers and diagram numbers as well. i dont remember if the diagrams i saw were before or after the cert tables showing what each quals you for.

2006 d1.1, -Table 4.10 note D says," Not qualified for joints welded from one side without backing, or welded from two sides without backgouging." That applies to 4.27 and 4.28.- That's for a CJP butt-grove. On a PJP butt-grove, that note does not apply. It also doesn't apply on t,y,k conections.

All prequalified joints in pipe, require backing, per D1.1. If you would like to qualify with an open root, you will need to run a PQR. The test can be ran either way. But if no backing is used, the coupon will have to be tested as a PQR instead of a Welder qual.
