Are forgings subject to charpy testing.  I have a sitation where a material is called out as Astm 668 and for some reason charpy tests were requested but I cant find any testing requirements for charpies of forgings.  I am wondering if charpy tests are not applicable to forgings.  Thanks to anyone who can offer information.

Requirements for charpy testing will vary from one ASTM standard to another.

If you look at A668 Supplementary Requirements it says:

One or more of the following supplementary requirements shall apply only when specified by the purchaser in the inquiry, contract and order.  Details of these supplementary requirements shall be agreed upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser.

S11.  Tests in addition to those prescribed in Section 7 may be specified.

Section 7 does not include charpy test requirements, but the purchaser can ask for additional testing as he deems appropriate.

Hope this helps.

I believe you've described it pretty well.

The large forge shops that I have been in perform charpy impact testing daily.  We routinely specify on purchase orders the impact testing (charpy testing) requirements on forged materials.  What is your application, and was impact testing specified when you ordered the forgings?
