i have got a piece of 2" emt and i want to make a pie cut so i can make a 90 deg. elbow. i would also like to make 30 deg. offsets. all without actually bending the pipe. i want to learn how to make the correct cuts so things will fit together. i use emt because im an electrician and it is very plentiful. for you guys this is probably an easy one but im stumped.

there are plenty of books out there that have all the measurements needed to make the cuts you want. try pipefitter.com.

does anyone know of any websites that could demonstrate this?

Angle of cut = degrees of turn divided by number of welds x 2

EXAMPLE: 90 (degrees of turn) divided by 2 (3pc=2welds) x 2 = 22.5 degrees A of C

Measure back = OD of pipe x Tangent of the angle of cut divided by 2

MB is the distance up and down from the center line of the pipe creating the A of C as it diagonals through the pipe center in an orthographic side view.

End pc length which is one of 2 shorts in the 3 pc fitting is calculated as: End pc length = Radius of turn x Tangent of the A of C
Center pc = End pc x 2

On a final note, another length can be given called the straight side length. Calculated as : End pc - MB

Hope this helps and if you require a picture of how to layout the pattern let me know.
Regards.

Divide whatever degree it is by 2 and make that angle of cut. ( for a single miter fitting )
Rotate one of the pieces and put em back together.

I don't know of any pipefitter book that doesn't cover the complicated angles & miters

Search the web for pipe templates along with those offered in this thread.

There is no shortcut to anyplace WORTH going!

i believe what i am trying to do is called "miter" a pipe. a pipefitter suggested i get a franklin book? not really sure which one though. i went to my local ua but they said they could not sell me any books. i found them online but am skeptical about buying a book before i can look at it. any info wil help. thanks

If You wantto make a 90 deg junction with 1 weld You cut a 45 on each end and weld them back together at 90 deg. If You want to make a 90 with 2 welds You cut 22 1/2 degrees on the ends and make a short piece in the middle with a 22 1/2 degree on each end and weld it all together. Is this what You are trying to achive? The theory behind this is that 1/2 of the desired angle goes on each end for a 1 weld and 1/4 of the angle goes on each end for a 2 weld.

this is exactly what i am trying to do. thanks

Both of the little black Franklins are great books. The pipefitters and the welders.

I like the taller style as it already has the co-ordinates laid out for you if you use the correct template for the fitting you desire.

I highly recommend them.

Usually, if you get the ISBN # , librarys will sometimes order for you at cost. The last I bought were around $18.00 each.

Good Luck

"Pipe fitters and Pipe Welders Hand Book" little black book worth it's weight in gold.
