im welding in patches on an old truck im having trouble with tig welding in the patches and it was suggested to use silver solder. will this hold up in the long run as for paint and cracking? this is not anything structural. if not solder then maybe lead. i have some limited experience with it. thanks, robert

Lead is nice for body work, you can float it in and do "bondo" work with it. They dindnt call the old rods "Lead sleds" for nothin.

You can use silicon bronze rod and TIG the patch panels together.  Its lower heat and a perfectly good fix that paint will adhere to.

Body leading, used in conjunction with an offsetter for the joint, is phenominally strong.  I'm not sure why TIG isn't working for you, but lead soldering or lower heat joining with a torch may be the answer.  It was  done for years in non-structural joining of roofs to quarter-panels and more.
