haven't done this type of welding in some time.  need gap reccomendation, and any other help would be greatly appreciated.
could also use amp settings and ac  or dc

1/4" to 5/16" spacing using 1/8" 7018 at 105-120 A.

The root opening depends on the bevel angle, the use or no use of backing. Typically you will need a 1/16" to 1/8" root opening.
your electrode diameter will dicatate the amperage to use. You can get that information from the manufactuer of the electrode for different positions.
If I remeber correctly for a 1/8" diameter rod you will need to run it from 130 to 160 amps on DCEP. I dont suggest using AC.

if there is no backing its probably gonna be a 6010 root , about 90a for 1/8
and for the rest i like about 118a for 7018 1/8 when out of position

7018 root?? If so I'll give you some pointers on that near impossible task.

No offense, but if you feel it's nearly impossible you may need some brushing up yourself. All the open roots in our power plants are welded with 7018. Repairs are rare. These guys would find it much harder to put in a 6010 root, since they never do it. On the flip side the our pipeliners would struggle with the lo/hy roots. Just depends on what your familiar with. As far as any advise I could give really depends on your opening and how the puddle's moving, but traditionally we put the root in with a 'V' motion, pausing at the bottom point. The V is used to preheat the root face edges. But if it is going in tight stay right in the middle.

3/32 gap! Using a 70/18 1/8 welding rod! At 125/130 MAX Amps!

If it is the AWS welder performance test per D 1.1, it is a 1/4 inch root opening, +/- 0.

Is this for a job? What code are you welding to?  What does the WPS refer you to use for a gap etc etc?  I'm pretty sure 7018 open root is not prequalified so someone had to qualify it.  When I run my 7018 open root test plates I use A/C polarity for the root.  If the WPS was not qualified using A/C for the root then you can't use it.  I like to use a heavy 1/8'' gap at one end of the plate and a 5/32" at the other to allow for the amount the root opening will close while welding with a 3/32" rode. You have to keep the rod choked almost to the point where you put out the arc and that will happen a few times.;-)  If you need to qualify a procedure for open root 7018 I highly recomend an A/C root for consistency purposes.

I agree. The first place to look is the WPS. I have personally only seen one open butt E7018 WPS in my life and that was with ALCOA. They use it on plate and pipe. We ran a 3/32" gap with 3/32" land, 3/32" rod,and like someone else already mentioned keep the arc tight to the point of almost snuffing the fire out. Tie ins were somewhat tough. Does take some practice.

i,m an novice to 7018 in general,in answer to a thread on another site i had a go, tell the truth i was curious as to how they would burn.i thought they were very good on root. 3/32 rod, gap,  the amps were i think 95.the only difference to my normal root approach was a slightly heavier land.
