I have a friend that has a welding rig with a flat bed he has a miller big40 on anyway the question is he has replaced his starter on his pick up 3 times since Saturday he cannot figure out what is going on one rig welder told him that his welding machine is shorting out his starter any opinion on this issue the truck is 1984 gmc 1 ton sierra classic 3500 with a 454 engine.

Don't think a welder could short out a starter. 454 starters get real hot. One of the known problems with those engines. Is he using a good starter or the cheap ones from Autozone? My starter rebuilder has one for 454's, small gear reduction one not prone to overheating but a little pricey.
