It depends on what sort of circut the rheostat is wired to. With only the wires on the wiper and 1 end You have the range of resistance from near nothing to the rated resistance of the unit. What machine is this on, and have You looked at a schematic to see if there is supposed to be a wire on the other end of the coil? The picture does look loke the tab broke off.

It's on a SA-250!! But the thing is, that on the wiring diagram, there in not a connection connected there!

In that case I would look really close, that other conection might have ben clipped off to keep someone from using the wrong one by mistake. Does it wor OK?

Yes sir! It surely does work! I just wanted to make sure on what you guys had to say about it! And my dad and I said the same thing! Probably some one got some Pliers and cut that peice off, so nobody will use that side by mistake! lol! Wonderful Idea! Thanks for your help Dave!

Your rheostat is wired properly. The third leg is not connected.
