We have some large diamerter hot taps to do on high flow rate gas transmission lines (with operating pressure approx. 700 - 900 psi) and the contractor has qualified the proceedure using a "Heat imput control technique" instead of a temper bead sequence. The procedure was qualified to ASME section IX. Has anyone used this technique before?

I used it once for hardness reduction without PWHT for a component made out of steel similar to HY80.  This was before ASME IX was revised to include these techniques.  It did bring the hardness down where we wanted, and seemed to be fairly easy to use.  We were using the FCAW process.
