My old welder I bought a week ago is about to take all my hair out! Got 115 dc all through the exciter side and to the shunt coils , 19 ohms on each shunt and put them together and I have 39.5 ohms . Today I found a brush hanging up but still no output . Looked further continuity tested the main armature and no grounds . Took all the out put cables off every lug and cleaned real well . With it running I only can get 2 volts dc output on the leads with a small spark. It has to be in my main generator  BUT how can I test my 4 output wires (main windings) to tell me ITS BURNT UP and just give up the fight or to keep looking? Thanks Dean

I just don't want to keep calling Kay ,shes been a ton of help!

thats what mine was doing it was the exciter. The commutator on the exciter was kinda dark color. I cleaned it with fine sand paper not emery cloth. I think a commutator stone is better but I borrowed it out. Not sure if thats it ,but its worth a look.
