AWS D1.1 states in para 5.24.4 states that "in butt and corner joints, face reinforcement shall not exceed 1/8" (3mm) in height." Does this allowance apply to BOTH faces of a butt weld when both are accessable for inspection?

ASME Section VIII specifically states that this is the case. If you have an answer (or opinion) please state your reference. I'm preparing for a July CWI exam and preparing inspection procedures for an upcoming contract.

It refers to the total reinforcement, just like ASME. Look at figure 5.4 (D) and it shows that R is not to exceed 1/8", which is noted on both sides of the butt weld in the figure.

If you look at the D1.1 reference you will see that it is for 1/8" max on each side.
